He waited until the very last climb of this Giro d’Italia to make his mark, but that was all it took for Primož Roglič to claim the stage and the Maglia Rosa, ahead of the catwalk in Rome. The Slovenian fans who gathered along the slopes of Mount Lussari did not fail to show their affection, and the flags were in their thousands. “A path to heaven,” writes Jumbo-Visma on twitter.

Big disappointment for Geraint Thomas of course, who has to bid farewell to the Maglia Rosa with one day to go. The reaction, however, is that of a true gentleman: “Well, I left it all out there. Chapeau Roglič, you deserve it mate. If you’d offered me this a few months ago when things didn’t seem to be going my way, I’d have taken it. But right now I feel pretty devastated. Thanks to everyone for the support on the road, online and from back home. It’s been overwhelming. Long live the Giro”.
