Tadej Pogačar wins Stage 7 of the Giro d’Italia 2024

    10/05/2024

    • Tadej Pogačar completes the comeback over Filippo Ganna, winning the seventh stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia.
    • Ineos Grenadiers Filippo Ganna and Magnus Sheffield complete the podium in the Foligno-Perugia Tudor ITT.
    • Pogi extends lead over Martinez and Geraint Thomas, runs away with Maglia Rosa.

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has won Stage 7 of the 107th Giro d’Italia, the 40.6km long Foligno-Perugia Tudor ITT. Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) and Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) finished second and third respectively.

Pogačar “Super happy with the feeling on the time trial bike”

Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner and Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said:

“I’m super happy that I felt good on the time trial bike. I didn’t ride any TT since the world championships last year but I’ve worked a lot on it in the meantime and I’m glad it paid off today. I started at an easier pace to get used to the TT bike. Then I rode the climb full gas. I heard two time gaps but I wasn’t sure what they said in the radio so I was focusing on myself.

The climb suited me better than Pippo [Ganna] for sure. It was quite steep so it was to my advantage but it won’t be the case in the next time trial. Tomorrow I know Prati di Tivo. It was the queen stage when. I won up there during Tirreno-Adriatico two years ago but it’s just one stage of a Grand Tour this time around so it won’t be my goal to get my record time of climbing there after Lutsenko and Ulissi rode very fast up that hill one month ago during Il Giro d’Abruzzo”.

Geraint Thomas “Just one of those days…”

Ineos Grenadier Geraint Thomas was visibly disappointed as GC leader Tadej Pogačar extended his lead on the Welshman by two minutes in Stage 7 of the 2024 Giro d’Italia, the Foligno-Perugia Tudor ITT.

After a complicated ride in the Time Trial, Thomas stated:

“[It was] nothing to do with the wind,” the Ineos Grenadiers star argued “I tried to ride within myself. Then when it was time to go I felt Ok, but just lacked it a bit. I couldn’t get on top of it over those kickers, and it is what it is. It’s just one of those days.”

Stage 7 represented a big blow for Pogačar’s chasers in the general classification, as the Slovenian built a 2-minute, 36 seconds lead over his closest opponents.

However, there are many tests to follow, starting from Stage 8,  Spoleto – Prati di Tivo.
