Today’s stage of the Giro d’Italia
Stage 20: Belluno – Marmolada (Passo Fedaia) (168 km)
The route
Classic Dolomite mountain stage: the last uphill finish of the Giro d’Italia 2022. Departure from Belluno with a short diversions along the Piave valley between Sedico, Santa Giustina and Sospirolo. You then enter the Cordevole valley, which you climb up through Agordo and Cencenighe. There begins the final triplet of climbs with the San Pellegrino Pass (gradients of over 15% after Falcade) followed by the Pordoi Pass (Cima Coppi 2022) and finally the Fedaia Pass with the 6 km after Malga Ciapela always above 10% reaching gradients of 18%.
Last kilometres
Last 14 km all on a steep climb. After Caprile the road climbs steeply to Rocca Pietore where it becomes a false flat at around 2%. After Sottoguda the gradient climbs again until a short descent before Malga Ciapela (there is an illuminated bend tunnel to be noted). Last 6 km with average gradient around 12% and peaks halfway up of 18%.
Who will be the protagonists? Today, the ambitions of the GC men will become clear. If Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) can afford to run a little more defensively, considering that in view of the Verona time trial he seems to be the one with the advantage, Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) will have to try to move if the objective is really the Maglia Rosa. The space is there, we will see if the intentions are really to win the Giro or settle for a place on the podium. A big tussle is also expected for the finishing positions and for the Top 10, as well as for the stage victory, which could be the prerogative of the breakaway.
