Today’s Giro d’Italia stage
Stage 17: Ponte di Legno-Lavarone (168 km)
The route
A mountain stage divided into two parts. Upward start towards Passo del Tonale followed by a stretch of over 70 km, always substantially downhill, through the Sole and Non valleys. After crossing the Adige River, the route climbs Palù di Giovo through the Valle di Mocheni to reach Pergine Valsugana. The two final climbs are the Valico del Vetriolo long and pedalable (about 7% average) and the Menador climb (Kaiserjägerstrasse) with narrow sections, carved tunnels and gradients always over 10%. After leaving Monterovere a few undulating kilometres lead to the finish.
Last Kilometres
After the KOM the road descends a little to then climb until 4 km from the finish. Fast and wide descent for the last 700 m all slightly uphill.
Who will be the protagonists?
So far the great protagonist of this Giro d’Italia has been balance. If Mortirolo and Valico di Santa Cristina have failed to unblock the situation, the Mendaor is unlikely to do so. However, with its gradients it will give the big names in the general classification a chance to try. The head-to-head between Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe) is the most eagerly awaited, but also watch out for Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) and Joao Almedia (UAE Team Emirates), both less than a minute behind in the general classification. A little more space could be given to Vincenzo Nibali (Astana Qazaqstan), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-hansgrohe), who are further back in the GC. The arrival of a breakaway cannot be ruled out either.
