It’s a wrap on the 9th edition of Ride Green, Giro d’Italia’s sustainability project

10/12/2024

The ninth edition of Ride Green, Giro d’Italia’s social responsibility project dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability, has concluded. The initiative promotes the preservation of areas along the race route through the organization of waste sorting with a traceability and monitoring system.

This initiative continues to achieve significant results, benefiting not only local promoters but also numerous partners who share its values and purpose with RCS Sport. Complementing Ride Green are the environmental education promoted by BiciScuola and the sustainable mobility of Giro-E, an e-bike experience that takes place on the same days and routes as the Giro d’Italia.

During the last edition of the Giro d’Italia, approximately 70 kilograms of materials were collected at the start and finish areas, 84% of which went for recycling. Compared to 2023, the top three environmentally conscious finish towns increased their recycling rates by an average of 6%.

This positive trend highlights the important contribution of local institutions, whose active participation serves as a driver between companies and consortia, recruiting volunteers throughout the territory at recycling depots to ensure proper waste flow management. This effective framework allows the Giro d’Italia to position itself internationally as an increasingly environmentally conscious cycling event, capable of spreading the principles of sustainability and raising awareness among the public, local administrations, partners, and all athletes involved.

Below is this year’s ranking, compiled together with Cooperativa E.R.I.C.A., RCS Sport’s longtime partner in this process.

R-INTENTS

Ride Green is part of the broader R-INTENTS project, which aims to analyze the actual environmental and social impact of the Giro d’Italia and to foster dialogue within the ecosystem, identifying shared solutions to guide the evolution of the project towards regenerative economic models. Supporting RCS Sport in this increasingly structured journey for the past two years has been NATIVA – Regenerative Design Company.

The analysis of the Giro d’Italia aims to highlight both the event’s best practices and areas for improvement to guide future choices. Not only are tangible impacts considered, but also the intangible value inherent in the DNA of a sporting event: the well-being of people and the benefits to the territories involved, with a long-term perspective.
