    Giro-E Enel 2024 – Stage 11 Casalbordino – Francavilla al Mare

    15/05/2024

A downhill stage today for the cyclists of the Giro-E. In the second Abruzzo stage, they arrive, or rather descend from Casalbordino into Francavilla al Mare. From the hinterland to the coast, for a bike ride of about sixty kilometres. After yesterday’s big stage with the record altitude range for this year’s edition, this was the perfect route for catching your breath and cooling down the bike motors, hot after yesterday’s climb to Bocca della Selva. One can therefore dedicate oneself to a bit of tourism, right from the starting town, Casalbordino, whose territory stretches from the hills to the sea. The medieval historic centre, six kilometres from the coast, looks like an enchanted village. The over one hundred-year-old civic tower, the church of Santissimo Salvatore, Palazzo Furii, the characteristic alleyways… it’s like a journey back in time, where the surroundings just ask you to switch off your phone and let their beauty overwhelm. Even at the table: how can you resist the famous egg n’droccioloni, a long, square-section pasta made with the “guitar”, an ancient utensil used by Abruzzo housewives

Casalbordino – Francavilla al Mare stage

We are at the halfway point for the Giro-E Enel 2024.The eleventh stage out of twenty begins from the town of Antonio Tartaglia, Olympic 2-man bobsleigh champion in Nagano 1998 (and silver at the Sankt Moritz 2007 World Championships) despite the city being located just 203 metres above sea level. Finish line set in Francavilla al Mare, which has hosted the arrival three times and the departure four times of a Giro d’Italia stage. In the middle, as mentioned, lots of sea and all the beauty of pedalling.

Cyclist of the day – Marta Bastianelli

A road cycling great allowed herself an electric stage today: Marta Bastianelli, a long career from 2006 to 2023, almost 50 victories, including the 2007 World Championship, 2018 European Championship, 2018 Ghent-Wevelgem and 2019 Tour of Flanders. She has cycled with the Tudor team.

“First time for me on a pedal-assisted bike. It is a time of evolution; it gives anyone the opportunity to experience this sport, which requires effort. It is a good compromise for pedalling more simply, enjoying all the beauty of cycling. Like the Giro-E, which allows you to enjoy the spectacle of the Giro d’Italia. My relationship with the bike today is much calmer than it used to be, I pedal without stress: if I feel like it I pedal, otherwise I do something else. I live it in a peaceful way so when I pedal, I am happy. The great thing about the bike? It allows you to reach any place in a short time and also makes you feel good mentally. My secret? I had a very high pain threshold, and this allowed me not to give up at times when I thought it was all over, when the fatigue was extreme, and to win the big races.”

City of Sport and Health, an opportunity for young people: in Casalbordino and Senigallia the series of ANCI workshops at the Giro d’Italia continues.

In the second week of the Giro-E, more positive feedback for the ANCI workshops in the municipalities hosting the stage starts, organised as part of the broader support and financing program for Italian municipalities under the National Youth Policy Fund.

The series of meetings continues on Thursday 16 May at 1pm in Senigallia. The workshop will focus on opportunities for economic and social growth for young people through the valorisation of resources, sports and major events.

The focus of the work, in the hospitality area of the Green Fun Village, will be to strengthen the network between public and private, in the context of the work of the ANCI Next Gen Community to implement investments with an increasingly impactful impact on the young people who are the recipients.

Of note are the projects “with and for” young people that will be presented by public and private operators active in the sector of youth policies: among these Alfredo Panzini Secondary School, Panathlon Club of Senigallia, Wanda Di Ferdinando Foundation and Weymouth, as well as MOST, the National Centre for sustainable mobility funded established at MIT, as part of the EU Next Generation measures. Thanks to the collaboration with ANCI Marche, the meeting also sees the involvement of the Polytechnic University of Marche, with the presence of “Green Plasma”, a special vehicle created as part of a project for the production of electricity through the recycling of plastic recovered at sea.

From Casalbordino and Senigallia the Giro-E starts resumes again with the ANCI team, captained by Giorgio Rocca, a former skier, and leading a group of local administrators and ambassadors. For info and registration click here: link
