Conad becomes the new Maglia Bianca sponsor

    19/12/2024

The partnership between two icons of Italian excellence was made official today in Milan. The Conad brand will appear on the jersey dedicated to young riders for the next three years.

The Maglia Bianca of the Giro d’Italia will have a new sponsor for the next three years: Conad.

Italian identity, international growth, strong local presence, and a focus on youth and sustainability are some of the core values shared by the Giro d’Italia and Conad.

In addition to appearing on the Maglia Bianca, Conad will also be present at the Giro d’Italia through the BiciScuola and Fantagiro projects.

Conad, headquartered in Bologna, is the largest organization of independent retail entrepreneurs in Italy.

    Quotes

Urbano Cairo, President of RCS MediaGroup: “The Maglia Bianca is one of the symbols of the Giro d’Italia, recognized worldwide. It has been worn and won by great champions, and in the last edition, it was claimed by a young Italian, Antonio Tiberi. The presence across the territory, international reach, and focus on youth and the environment are some of the cornerstones of the Giro d’Italia that will help Conad support and strengthen all their communication activities”.

Francesco Avanzini, General Director of Conad: “We are very pleased with the multi-year partnership with RCS Sports & Events: we will sponsor the Maglia Bianca of the Giro d’Italia, awarded to the leader of the young riders’ classification. By participating in the premier competition of Italy’s most popular sport, Conad will enjoy an engaging presence across its territories, connect with the audience following the race, and promote an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Paolo Bellino, Managing Director and General Manager of RCS Sports & Events: “The Giro d’Italia is a unique event due to its strong local presence and its ability to engage all demographics. It is a tradition loved by everyone, including younger audiences, who connect with the Giro through school programs and our digital platforms. Conad will be by our side in initiatives such as Biciscuola, FantaGiro, and the sponsorship of the Maglia Bianca; activities with great visibility across the territory and projects that, like Conad, highlight themes such as nutrition, the environment, and well-being through sport.”

Ivan Basso, Giro d’Italia winner in 2006, 2010: “The Giro d’Italia is a dream that every boy nurtures from the moment they start riding a bike. Personally, I dreamed of just participating, so you can imagine my happiness and pride in winning it twice. The new generations are the future of cycling and that’s what I like to bring to our team. We believe that investing in them means building a better tomorrow, and I personally strive to pass on to them everything I’ve learned throughout my long career”.

History and numbers of the Maglia Bianca

The Maglia Bianca, awarded to the best Under 25 rider, is the most recently introduced classification: the ranking was first established in 1969 as a classification for neo-professionals.

In 1973 and 1974, an armband was used to single out the leader, but since 1976, the Maglia Bianca has been the symbol of supremacy. From 1970 to 1972, in 1975, and from 1995 to 2006, this classification was not compiled.

    • The last Italian to win the Maglia Bianca was Antonio Tiberi in 2024, ending a drought that began after Fabio Aru’s victory in 2015.
    • The “youngest of the young” is Alfio Vandi, who won the classification in 1976 at the age of 20 years and 187 days.

Italian riders have claimed the best young rider classification 18 times. Colombia ranks second with 6 victories.

    • The Maglia Bianca and Maglia Rosa double has been achieved on four occasions: Evgueni Berzin in 1994; Nairo Quintana in 2014; Tao Geoghegan Hart in 2020; and Egan Bernal in 2021.
    • In the 2020 edition, Giro winner Tao Geoghegan Hart became the first Briton to claim the Maglia Bianca.
    • In 2022, Juan Pedro Lopez became the first Spaniard to win the Maglia Bianca.
