Plapp: "I still can't believe it"
Stage winner Luke Plapp, right after the finish, said: “It’s unbelievable. Honestly, I’m still struggling to believe it. It feels like it’s been a long journey—I focused a lot on the Australian summer, but couldn’t get results in Europe. At the Giro last year, I came so close so many times. To finally do it today is really special. We had this stage marked for weeks. This morning on the team bus, we were fired up. The fight to get in the break was insanely hard, and once I made it up front, I decided to go solo with 45 km to go because I knew I couldn’t beat any of them in a sprint. The first to attack always has the advantage, so I thought: ‘I’ll go for it’.From last year’s Olympics to wrist surgery in February, and even the crash in the Giro’s first time trial… this win pays back all the effort it took to come back after everything I’ve been through”.

First Grand Tour stage win for Plapp
Luke Plapp claims his first-ever stage victory in a Grand Tour, becoming the 20th Australian to win at the Giro.
It’s his 8th pro win, and notably, only two of those aren’t national championships:
– Stage 2 of the Tour of Hellas
– Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia
(both achieved this year).
Fun fact: Plapp is the second rider born on Christmas Day (2000) to win a Giro stage, after Guido Reybrouck (born 1941).

Welcome to Castelraimondo
Castelraimondo is a town in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region of Italy, with a population of around 4,500. The village sits at 307 meters above sea level, nestled in the Potenza River valley, and surrounded by hills covered in vineyards, olive groves, and woods.
Founded between 1311 and 1318, the town takes its name from Raimondo di Attone di Aspello. Its symbol is the Cassero, a 38.3-meter-high watchtower that was part of the Intagliata defensive system, built by the Da Varano family to protect nearby Camerino.
Among the town’s key landmarks are the Church of San Biagio, the parish church, and the Castle of Lanciano in the nearby hamlet of the same name—renowned for its ties to the Da Varano family and the Renaissance renovations it underwent in the 15th century.
Castelraimondo is best known for the Infiorata del Corpus Domini, an annual tradition in which the town’s streets are decorated with intricate floral carpets depicting religious scenes.

Giulianova, between sea and rivers
Giulianova is a town in the Abruzzo region, located in the province of Teramo, overlooking the Adriatic Sea between the Salinello and Tordino rivers. It was founded in the 15th century by Giulio Antonio I Acquaviva d’Aragona, who named it “Giulia Nova.” The city was conceived as a model Renaissance “ideal city.” The historic center, known as Giulianova Alta, sits on a hill about 68 meters above sea level, while the modern, tourist-oriented area stretches along the coast as Giulianova Lido.
Among its main landmarks is the Cathedral of San Flaviano, built in the 15th century in Renaissance style, featuring an octagonal layout and military architectural elements. Another key site is the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore, built at the site of a Marian apparition. It includes a miraculous spring and the Museum of Art of the Splendore, which houses works from the 13th century to contemporary times.
Giulianova is also a prominent seaside tourist destination, with around five kilometers of sandy coastline and an active fishing port. The city has a rich cultural tradition, home to several libraries and museums, including the Vincenzo Bindi Civic Art Gallery.
In sports, it hosts ASD Giulianova Calcio 1924 and the Polisportiva Amicacci Giulianova, a wheelchair basketball team that has won national and international titles.
