Gubbio, arguably the most beautiful medieval town in the world
Gubbio is a historic town in the province of Perugia, Umbria, renowned for its extraordinary architectural and cultural heritage. Its origins date back to pre-Roman times, as evidenced by the Eugubine Tablets, a set of important inscriptions in the ancient Umbrian language.
The beautifully preserved historic center is dominated by the majestic Palazzo dei Consoli, built between 1332 and 1349, now home to the Civic Museum.
Facing the Cathedral stands the Palazzo Ducale, commissioned in 1470 by Federico da Montefeltro and designed by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, a fine example of Renaissance architecture.
Gubbio is also famous for the Festa dei Ceri, held every May 15th in honor of Saint Ubaldo, the city’s patron saint. It is one of the oldest and most unique folk traditions in Italy.
During the Christmas season, Gubbio lights up with the world’s largest Christmas tree, created using over 800 lights stretched across the slopes of Mount Ingino, a dazzling display that earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records in 1991.
