13 years as a pro and a historic Giro d'Italia. After winning the Giro di Lombardia in his debut season (1964), Gianni Motta claimed the 1966 edition of the Corsa Rosa by taking the leadership symbol on stage 15, the Arona-Brescia, after a thrilling battle with Italo Zilioli. In that same edition, Motta also took two stage wins, the Riva del Garda-Levico Terme and the Bolzano-Moena, where he defeated none other than Jacques Anquetil. That of 1966 would turn out to be the only Maglia Rosa for the Cassano d'Adda native, who was hampered at the peak of his career by a nasty leg injury. In his final years, Motta still managed to win two more Giro stages, the Ravenna-Fermo (1972) and the Milan-Iseo (1973).
