Technical info
A route perfect for cyclists and families with limited training, the uphill sections are not long and do not feature excessive slopes.
We set off from the Ciclovia Adriatica (see Route 1), riding south along the currently available section. We cover about 10 km of flat, well-paved (green coloured) cycle path.
Once in Fossacesia Marina, the route climbs to the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere and then to Fossacesia via easy roads with little traffic except during peak tourist periods when traffic can be heavier.
The descent to Fossacesia Marina does not present any particular difficulties.
NOTES:
At the time of drafting this text, the cycle path goes as far as the village of Torino di Sangro Marina. To continue further southwards, it would be necessary to tackle the Adriatic State Road 16 (SS16) with its light and heavy traffic. This option was not taken into consideration in this case.
To be noted as a point of caution at Fossacesia Marina, both going and coming back, are two short sections of 300 m each on the SS16. In case of heavy traffic, it is advisable to get off the bike, use the available pavement and cross carefully at the pedestrian crossings.
