Technical info
A very demanding route in all respects.
From a sporting point of view because of the length, the altitude gain and the endless ups and downs, and from a traffic point of view because of the roads intensely frequented by car tourism.
One must constantly bear in mind that the roads, although enormously scenic and interesting for the views they offer, are on average narrow and characterised by heavy traffic.
The first 12 km lead to the foot of the Valico di Chiunzi.
From the top of Colle San Pietro begins the most panoramic part of the route, which fully justifies having to put up with traffic. The view is immense towards the sea offering incredible glimpses.
We then ride to Sorrento along the coast with continuous ups and downs (passage on Picco Sant’Angelo, a climb of about 7 km at 4%).
After Sorrento, we head back to the start, mostly riding across inhabited areas with the relatively low traffic.
On the coastal stretch, it is possible to stop almost anywhere for selfies or refuelling.
NOTES:
The Amalfi coast has only one road, meaning cars and bikes have no choice but share it. The area is quite busy, especially in summer. For the same reasons, it can also be very complicated to find parking along the entire route.
POSSIBLE DETOURS/ALTERNATIVE ROUTES:
Optionally, it is possible to cut before Picco Sant’Angelo directly to Meta, shortening the loop by about 25 km. A further cut, from Amalfi to Castellammare, would be available, but this would imply a climb ending in a 916 m tunnel. Cyclists are therefore strongly advised against this option.
