Technical info
A circular route around Lake Santa Croce with a detour up the Nevegal from its easy side. The effort is never extreme, and its location makes it approachable from as early as spring.
We start by climbing to Pieve d’Alpago (5.8 km at 5.5%) to then return to the valley as far as Bastia, from where the loop around Lake Santa Croce begins. The road is all very slightly uphill until Fadalto and then steadily downhill. There are three short tunnels in the uphill section, which however do not create any visibility problems. Although the road is sometimes classified as a state road, traffic is usually scarce thanks to the adjacent A27 motorway.
We then climb up to Vich, a picturesque village at the foot of the Nevegal, and then on to Quantin. From the Quantin cemetery, we turn right towards Losego and tackle a quick descent along the via della Vena d’Oro, heading down to the valley and back to Cadola without travelling along any major traffic roads.
There are several fountains along the route and refreshments can be found in every village crossed.
NOTES:
Teglio, home of the well-known local dish Pizzoccheri, is the town that gives its name to the entire valley (Val Teglina, later to become Valtellina).
In Tirano, just before the Sanctuary, we cross the Bernina railway, it is a barrier-free crossing so pay attention to the traffic lights.
POSSIBLE DETOURS/ALTERNATIVE ROUTES:
In order to shorten the route, it is possible to head straight for the start at the foot of Nevegal, bearing in mind that this is a road with a fair amount of traffic when approaching the motorway junction.
It is also possible to make some detours to make the route more challenging. The two most interesting possibilities are from Farra up to Pianture, Malga Mezzomiglio 9 km at an average of 10% with peaks of up to 20%, and from Quantin up to Nevegal. In the latter case, we recommend descending towards Belluno (very fast descent) and reaching Levego and via della Vena d’Oro from the village of Castion.
