The Rocca Malatestiana (Malatestian Stronghold) of Cesena is one of the most imposing fortresses in Emilia-Romagna. Located on the top of the Garampo hill, within the Parco della Rimembranza, it was built in the 14th century by the Malatesta family, not far from the ruins of the two previous fortresses, dating back to the late Roman and medieval periods. From the terraces, which can be walked, it is possible to enjoy a vast panoramic view as far as the sea. The fortress is part of a larger system of fortifications surrounding the town of Cesena, which fascinated none other than Leonardo da Vinci himself. In 1502, during one of his stays in Cesena, Leonardo was commissioned by Cesare Borgia to inspect the fortifications in order to improve their defences. Today, his notes are kept in the Library of the French Institute in Paris.
