tourist info

In the Riserva del Vulture in the region of Basilicata, the Monticchio Lakes (Lago Grande and Lago Piccolo) are nicknamed the “eyes of the dormant volcano” as they occupy, at an altitude of about 650 metres, the space left by the crater of Mount Vulture, an ancient inactive volcano. They both have a slightly elliptical shape and are separated from each other by an isthmus of about 250 metres. The Lago Piccolo (Small lake) is fed by underwater springs and connected with Lago Grande (big lake), located at a slightly lower altitude, by means of a stream. They are surrounded by a thick vegetation of beech and chestnut trees, silver firs, oaks and pine trees, while water lilies bloom in their waters. The two lakes are among the warmest in Italy.
