Follow the signs for Santa Maria del Cedro along fairly narrow roads. The route passes near the ruins of the San Michele Castle and reaches Santa Maria del Cedro, wherefrom you can enjoy lovely views over the Tyrrhenian coast. Descent to the railway station followed by a gentle climb heading to Maierà with several vantage points.
The course then rolls downhill to Diamante, where you can take a break on the seafront and find any refreshments you may need.
Then the route passes through Cirella and its charming alleyways, as the one-way roads force you to take a few corners (this was the case when we designed the route).
The route crosses the ss.18 to reach Santa Maria del Cedro Stazione.
The return to Scalea runs on flat roads.

NOTES:
Scalea lies on the ss.18, a busy road with both cars and trucks. We advise against riding there, except on the short stretches we have described here (please, be very careful), since they are indispensable to complete the route.

ROUTE CHANGES DURING YOUR RIDE:
If you have difficulty in completing the route, at the junction for Grisolia you can go to Santa Maria del Cedro Stazione and get directly from km 15.5 to 41.8.
In Scalea (local traffic permitting) you can ride along the same itinerary you have just covered to reach the car park at the start point.

The Riviera dei Cedri is the northern Calabrian strip of the Tyrrhenian coast, in the province of Cosenza.

Its name, like that of Santa Maria del Cedro, derives from the widespread cultivation of cedars, a citrus fruit of ancient origin particularly important in Jewish orthodoxy.

The variety of citrus fruit grown in Santa Maria del Cedro is considered so prized that the rabbis look for the ‘perfect citrus’ to be used as a votive offering for the Jewish ritual of the Feast of Tabernacles, or Sukkot, in memory of the journey to the promised land.
