Technical info
A very short route suitable for a bicycle tour of the historical and archaeological sites of central Rome, with endless possible stops along the way.
Starting from the Colosseum, we cycle through the Imperial Forum with Mount Palatine and its excavations, the Forum of Trajan, the Capitoline Hill and the Altar of the Fatherland to one side. We ride along a short stretch open to traffic, but (as at 2023) with partial separation of the cycle part until reaching river Tiber at Piazza Paoli along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. We cross the Tiber on the Sant’Angelo Bridge (attention: push the bicycle by hand) to reach Castel Sant’Angelo with its famous statue at the top (opera fans may recall the Tosca, which was performed here back in 1992). Take the Tiber cycle path under the Sant’Angelo Bridge until reaching the Sublicio Bridge and from there following the cycle path to the Circus Maximus. Via San Gregorio street (watch out for traffic) we then return to the Flavian Amphitheatre.
NOTES:
The centre of Rome is hard to reach by car and, in particular, the Colosseum cannot be reached by car at all. It is advisable to look for a suitable car park nearby, leave your car there and set off with your own or rented bicycle.
