Technical info
High mountain route entirely on the Gran Sasso.
Departure from Calascio with an initial false-flat section. From Santo Stefano di Sessanio begins the very long climb leading to Campo Imperatore.
The climb does not feature significant gradients until the last 4 km, which are the only ones around 9% with peaks of up to 13%. However, the fact remains that we are pedalling around and over 2000 metres altitude and this can be a performance handicap to be taken into account when balancing one’s energy.
The descents are quite fast and easy to ride. On the descent, we cross Castel del Monte, the last village before returning to the start.
NOTES:
This itinerary is characterised by long passages on a false plain at an altitude of around 1,600 metres in an environment that is completely uninhabited in the off-season and very sparsely populated in summer. Bear in mind that the possibilities for refreshment are very limited outside the three towns crossed.
Pay close attention to animals that may be present on the roadway both in and out of season.
