BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE
Very testing route suitable only for very well-trained cyclists who are ready to ride for many hours. The route takes in two extremely demanding ascents: Vetriolo Pass (Compet) from Pergine Valsugana and Monterovere (Kaiserjägerstrasse or the Menador climb)
Technical info
You set off from Lavarone (Chiesa), or you can also start from Gionghi. The route descends to Calceranica al Lago passing through Carbonare and Fricca Pass (slight ascent). Then, it runs along Lake Caldonazzo and, once in Pergine Valsugana, negotiates the Vetriolo climb. Here very regular gradients might allow you – if you have good legs – to push without shifting gear along the entire climb even at a fairly brisk pace. A fast-rolling descent leads to Levico Terme (mind the urban crossing) and reaches Caldonazzo, where you must follow the signs for “Kaiserjägerstrasse”.
The climb is immediately very steep with breathtaking views (as well as ‘breath-taking’ gradients) until you enter the gully. There are several places with great views overlooking the Valsugana. Two very short tunnels are worth mentioning. The road becomes very narrow from just before the tunnels for about two kilometres. However, the traffic is almost non-existent except for other cyclists and a few cars travelling towards Lavarone or Asiago.
Past the summit, the route crosses the road heading to Asiago and runs almost entirely downhill back to the start point.
NOTES:
Lavarone has many car parks, in particular those around Lake Lavarone and those in Gionghi near the Town Halla.
ROUTE CHANGES DURING YOUR RIDE:
If you want to face one climb only, you can split the route into two loops starting in Caldonazzo.
But if you want to add something different to the route, inspired by the Giro d’Italia 2022, once you pass Monterovere you can go to Luserna. If you rather wish to try a variant on the first cimb, you can reach Vetriolo Terme adding an extra short climb and ride down to Levico Terme along the Strada dei Baiti (mind the narrow and steep road).
