BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE
A short yet panoramic route around the tip of Capo Peloro, the Charybdis of the Strait of Messina. The course is suitable for both cyclists and families alike. There are no proper climbs along the course, and the low-gradient inclines are not long.
Technical info
Along the route you can enjoy stunning views overlooking the Strait.
You set off in Capo Peloro or, alternatively, Ganzirri where you can find some car parks.
The route rolls along the Tyrrhenian coast of northern Sicily. Along the climb there are some interesting vantage points, but the most stunning views are along the descent, past Faro Superiore, overlooking Calabria’s coast on the other side of the strait.
At few kilometres to the finish stands the 224-m-high Torre Faro Electrical tower, which used to bring 220’000-Volt high voltage to Sicily. This very interesting engineering work was erected in 1955 and decommissioned in 1985 (all the cables have been removed).
NOTES:
Once the Faro Superiore descent is over, you must ride for a few kilometres on busy roads toward Messina. Hence, mind the traffic.
