The Route
This is a mountain stage with long downhill or flat drags in between the climbs. After the Sella Chianzutan categorised climb (on relatively wide and well-paved roads), a long descent leads all the way to Tolmezzo. The route then clears the 2nd category Forcella di Monte Rest on narrowed roadway (with several hairpins along the climb and the descent, at times inside a tunnel). The following descent then leads to the Pala Barzana KOM summit, with some intricate sectors while travelling uphill across the urban areas. The route then takes a technical descent, followed by a perfectly-surfaced and well-lit tunnel of over 4 km, and eventually levels out until Aviano, where the final climb begins.
Final kilometres
The final 15 km run entirely uphill. The first 10 kilometres go up at very steep gradients – around 9% and topping out at 14%. With 10.9 km to go, the road levels out and even descends a little, then climbs up again (passing through an avalanche gallery) with milder gradients (max. 8%). The final kilometre is quite sinuous, still climbing slightly. The home stretch (100 m in length) sits on a wide, mild bend, on 7.5 m wide asphalt road, and has a 1.5% uphill gradient.

Base Aerea Rivolto (Frecce Tricolori)
Overview
On 18th October 2020, for the first time in the history of the bike race Giro d’Italia (also known as the pink race), a stage will start from a military airport, which is Rivolto airbase (UD), home of the 2nd Wing of Italian Air Force and Frecce Tricolori since their establishment in 1961.
The very strong relationship between Frecce Tricolori and Giro d’Italia will get even closer on next 18th October with an event that will mark a fundamental stage on the way to the Frecce Tricolori 60th birthday.
The Frecce Tricolori
The 313rd Acrobatic Training Squadron, better known as Frecce Tricolori, is the Italian Air Force Unit which has the task of representing the values, the professionalism and the teamwork ability of the whole Armed Force.
With its activity, the National Acrobatic Training Squadron is in fact ambassador of the beliefs and the skills typical of the Italian Armed Forces in general.
During airshows, with its collective acrobatic flight, Frecce Tricolori demonstrate the professionalism of both pilots and technicians by emphasizing the specific technical features of a “made in Italy” aircraft.
Once abroad, Frecce Tricolori have the honor of promoting the entire “Italian system”.
The Squadron consists of about 100 Officers and NCOs of the Italian Air Force.
The formation of 10 aircrafts (9 + solo) is made up of Jet Pilot Officers of the Air Force coming from the Air Force Fighter Wings which, after passing a selection, become part of the Frecce Tricolori where they spend a period of their operational career and then return to the combat Units at the end of their experience.
The ground team of Frecce Tricolori, about 70 Non-Commissioned Officers, deals with the maintenance of the Aermacchi MB339A-PAN aircraft.
Piancavallo
Overview
Piancavallo, part of the municipality of Aviano (PN), is a landmark for winter sports and a nice place for a summer holiday too.
Skiers will have at their disposal 17 km. of alpine ski slopes; several competitions of the womens’ Alpine Ski World Cup have been held on these tracks. Piancavallo was one of the first ski resorts in Italy to install an artificial snow system.
In Piancavallo you can find a ski school to learn ski basics, a play area for kids and the Funkpark where you can go snowboarding and freestyling; many people have fun on the railtrack bobsleigh. For those who prefer nordic skiing Piancavallo offers 18 km. of cross country ski tracks and an illuminated ring for night skiing. The “Palaghiaccio” is the ideal place for ice skating lovers.
In 2003 Piancavallo hosted some of the Winter Universiade competitions and here came athletes from all around the world.
During the rest of the year in Piancavallo you can go hiking on foot or by mountain bike, and play outdoor or indoor sports (in the sports hall): among them tennis, soccer, roller skating and minigolf.
