Biella, Between Craftsmanship and Folk Arts
Nestled at the foot of the Biellese Alps, Biella is crossed by the Elvo, Oropa, and Cervo streams. Its origins date back to the High Middle Ages, and in 1379 it came under the rule of the House of Savoy. In the 19th century, it became an important center of the textile industry, renowned for its high-quality wool production.
Biella’s historical heritage includes the 9th-century Romanesque Baptistery, the Cathedral of Saint Stephen, and the Basilica of San Sebastiano, a fine example of Renaissance architecture. The Sanctuary of Oropa, located at 1,159 meters above sea level, is one of the Alps’ main Marian pilgrimage sites and part of the UNESCO Sacred Mountains.
In 2019, Biella was designated a UNESCO Creative City for craftsmanship and folk arts. In 2021, it was awarded the title of Alpine City of the Year, in recognition of its commitment to sustainable development.
